Are you afraid of the dark? The lingering shadows that surround you in the night . . . the chills that scale down your backside . . . the insanity that can easily corrupt your mind... and the bloodlust that controls your well being?
Well, are you?
Crossroads: From Dawn to Dusk is that of a different take on the casual Vampire vs. Lycan tale. The setting takes place in London, England (late 19th / 20th century) where the British Folklore are known to be scarce - but are they really?
Our characters are those who live their 'true lives' in secrecy, but tend to partake in actual human activities just for the hell of it. Not only do they deal with the common complications of keeping their identities from those cluesless around them, but each race (Humans, inlcuded) is dealing with the stress of staying alive.
The scent of a Vampire is purely repulsive to a Lycan, while the common werewolf causes a similar affect to Vampires; however their thirst for blood continues to grow. As for our humans, they reside in this Dog-Eat-Dog world either confused or "preparing" for any possible attack placed onto them . . . seeing that the only safety a Human can find is with a Hunter.
And then there are Hybrids, a certain race of Vampire or Lycan that is born to deal with the stress of being a "half blood". Either being killed during infancy or later on in time, Hybrids do need to keep a good eye out. After a long pause of possible warfare, the creatures of the night are beginning to stir once again, and the slayers are awaiting such a moment.
However, the sudden death of Slayers de Tres (Uma, Bairavi and Ambika) has raised suspicion to who exactly murdered three of the most powerful Hunters from periods before. Many are beginning to get restless . . .
In this time and place . . . everyone is prey . . .
The History of Vampires
Nobody knows for sure how they came to be, nor why they are here. In the modern era, they are considered a work of fiction, and a very popular one at that. Actually, they are quite real, and live amongst human beings undetected and sound. Vampires are actually haemoglobins and are a sub-species of humans who need to drink blood to sustain life and strength. However, there are many misconceptions when it comes to their kind. Vampires don’t need to drink blood every day, and when they do drink blood, they don’t necessarily have to kill the person that they are getting their blood from. Animal blood works fine too, but lacks the usefulness and is needed in larger doses. The temptation to drink a lot of blood is there because blood gives power and strength to the vampire, and they might joke that just like it’s hard for a human to have just one Lays chips, it’s hard having just one pint of blood when so much is rushing just beneath the veins.
Vampires can also get sustenance from food, and like humans they have an appetite, however it’s not quite the same. They need the protein and plasma from the blood as least once a month, and their primal urges make them crave for it intensely. In the medieval age when vampires were reigning supreme, they were unrestrained and hostile, and with the large intakes of blood their powers grew to almost unbelievable heights. If a vampire drinks a pint of blood a day, that vampire achieves insane heights of smell, taste, sight and hearing. Their recovery rate becomes almost instantaneous, their already-fast speed becomes even faster, and with enough blood, they can reach psychic levels that borderlines the territory of God. Levitating objects, reading minds, they were a terror that the human kind didn’t want to face.
When vampires were binging on these effects, drinking a litre of blood a day which was considered their maximum, killing hundreds and thousands all across the world was where their downfall lied. People started to hang wreaths of garlic around their houses, bathed their skin in ginger, and would sleep with weapons to keep the vampires from coming within their houses at night. With so many scents it was nearly impossible for a vampire with such heightened senses to enter a house like that.
They do have a weakness, and this weakness is ironically the very source of life on earth; The Sun. Their skin is highly photosensitive, and just like a person allergic to Penicillin can bloat up and die the same can happen in a different light so to speak. The strong rays of the sun burn their skin to the point of dissolving, and it’s excruciatingly painful. One minute in the sun is enough to kill them, though it is possible to survive if they seek shelter and drink enough blood as soon as possible to start recovering fast. This is the only instance when a vampire would need to drain a person completely in order to survive, but they usually feel very sick later. Just like we would, if we ate an entire buffet.
The vampire race was nearly killed off after many raids by human and another rivaling species with no formal name. They were simply called Hunters, and it was their emergence that truly had them on the risk for total extinction.
The History of Lycans
In the films, they have the ability to transform into bipedal creatures. They are a variation on werewolves, and the term lycan is derived from the Greek "lycanthrope" or lycanthropy. In the films, lycans are opposed by "vampires", again a variation on the traditional vampires. Lycans display a number of greatly enhanced physical attributes. As with their rivals, the vampires, Lycans are immortal (many can survive centuries of captivity with no food or water in hibernation). They possess enhanced strength, speed, durability and regenerative abilities superior to that of most vampires. As with wolves, Lycans also possess superior tracking skills, a highly sensitive sense of smell and are able to sense Vampires in close proximity to themselves.
Their bite releases the lycan virus, which can aggressively overtake a normal human's physiology, possibly causing them to become a Lycan as well. Similar to vampires, Lycans have the ability to easily survive falls from great altitudes by landing on their feet. Unlike Vampires, though, Lycans possess the ability to crawl along walls and ceilings swiftly and easily for extended periods of time. This also allows Lycans to be able to scale tall walls and barriers with ease. Most modern fiction describes werewolves as vulnerable to silver weapons and highly resistant to other attacks. Unlike vampires, Lycans are not generally thought to be harmed by religious artifacts such as crucifixes and holy water. In many countries, rye and mistletoe were considered effective safeguards against werewolf attacks. Mountain ash is also considered effective, with one Belgian superstition stating that no house was safe unless under the shade of a mountain ash. In some legends, werewolves have an aversion to wolfsbane.
The History of "The Hunters"
What vampires and lycans were to humans, the Hunters were to them. Over-exposure to the DNA in either creature's saliva did a very strange thing to a few select humans. It mutated them into something extraordinary, and these creatures created a sort of monster that would be their undoing. With all their overindulging, they didn’t realize that beneath their fangs and claws were rising predators that were once prey.
These little mutations were accumulating over the years, and soon there were people born that could barely be considered human. Their nature, deep down, can be as animalistic as their rival species, and they are built to lure them and then kill. The frightening thing is that these hunters seem to have very little weakness. They do not have the scent of smell like vampires or lycans do; instead their scent seems to call to them. Like sailors to the sirens, they are beckoned.
Vampires and Lycans grow primal and unthinking in their presence, making it easy for them to become victims. Hunters don’t have the hearing or the speed, but the strength is incredible. If a Hunter was playing a game of tug-a-war against thirty 'monsters', only then would there be any sort of tie. If one sole vampire (or werewolf) was playing tug-a-war against one hundred humans, only then would there be any sort of tie. It’s surreal how much power THAT kind of strength can carry. To make things worse, these Hunters also have psychic abilities. They are more in the form of casting illusions to further help lure and disorient, and they can mentally control vampires to a point by hypnotization, just like vampires can for humans. However, like Lycans, there are moments in times in which a certain craving for flesh might take over; resulting in almost cannibalistic actions.
This is what makes them so dangerous, but they are an extremely rare species and the truly powerful, full-fledged hunters seem to be a myth. They are not photosensitive, and their only tie in blood is the bloodlust for these monsters. The aura of a vampire triggers instincts to kill, and the scent of a werewolf triggers instincts to hunt, but otherwise they have always walked amongst their human brethren. A vampire will immediately know one by scent and because even the most regal and restrained succumb to their dark urges while a Lycan might have some difficultites.
The traits for a Hunter are not as precise as either monster. Only that a majority of them seem to be female, and that they are quite beautiful creatures. In the medieval days there was a ratio of one hunter to a hundred vampires and about fifty lycans, but numbers meant nothing here. Humans didn’t do ten percent to these murderous populations as they did, and thus as they nearly committed a mass wipe-out both sides reacted.
They united together in a war for supremacy, and slowly as the dark ages left the vampires and lycans in their small numbers were victorious. They made sure that these Hunters were extinct. Their victory didn’t mean they were again the power that they were. While Hunters wiped out a fair amount of them, the human population boomed. It was impossible for either creature to dominate again, especially since they could never again binge on the humans as they did once before, for fear of bringing back their predators again. Besides, if they killed too many the humans would revolt, and with their tiny numbers they’d join extinction along with their hated rivals.
* Humans and Hybrids are already understandable.
Sorry if it's too confusing! If you have any questions, Keyonna is available on the CBox (after all, she did create this plot *winks*)
